URGENT. Projets SVE recherchent volontaires

SLOVAQUIE : au sein du village de Torysa, votre objectif sera de renforcer la dimension interculturelle dans la vie quotidienne des habitants du village : mise en place d'activités éducatives pour les jeunes, organisation de loisirs, apprentissage de techniques audiovisuelles et réalisation d'un reportage. Début le 1er février (possibilité de différer légèrement le départ).   BULGARIE : dans le magnifique petit village montagneux de Gudevica, vous participerez à un projet centré sur l'écologie dans une école : rénovation à l'aide de matériaux naturels, aménagement de toilettes sèches, plantation de légumes bio, mise en place d'activités de loisirs avec les enfants du village. Projet de 6 mois, de mai à fin octobre. Candidat à trouver au plus tard pour le 25 janvier.   ESPAGNE : plusieurs projets (animations dans une communauté tsigane, dans une maison de repos ou dans un centre pour personnes en situation de handicap) à découvrir via ce lien.   ARMENIE : plusieurs projets dans le domaine de l'aide à l'enfance (orphelinats, centre pour jeunes défavorisés ou atteints de maladies psychiques, ...) à découvrir via ce lien.

Ceci est un peu en réponse aux messages de Maïlys et Caroline, qui toute inquiètes, m'ont contactée pour voir si elles devaient toujours partir en SVE pour être (mal) accueillies par CEI à Sumy.

 

Je leur ai exposé mon point de vue, en proposant aussi des alternatives en Ukraine à travers les contacts que j'ai développé sur place), mais surtout, comme je l'avais mis en avant, l'association d'envoi est aussi un choix essentiel à la réussite d'un SVE.

 

J'ai eu beaucoup de chance avec Views, mon association Belge. Du coup, lorsqu'ils m'ont envoyé la nouvelle liste des projets qu'ils proposent cette année, j'ai décidé de la publier ici, pour offrir de nouvelles pistes de SVE, avec une association qui a toute ma confiance.

 

Ces propositions se situent toutes en Estonie, quoique différent, je pense que c'est un pays aussi intéressant à visiter, avec un passé similaire et un futur plus rassurant:

The main field of activities is multimedia (video- and reportage-making).

 

Estonian Special Youth Work Organisation noOR is working as a coordinating

organisation in the EVS field for the 1st February 2012 deadline. We have following

projects available and waiting for CV's and mot. letters form interested volunteers.

 

1. Muumipere Lastesõim Kindergarden (2009-EE-39)

Details: Work in a kindergarden with small children in Tallinn – 9 months starting in

September 2012 until end of May 2013.

Preferred profile: Young person with strong desire to work with small children,

creative, pro-active and communicative. Previous experience in working with kids

(babysitting, practice, etc..) is a bonus.

2. Tallinna Mutionu Kindergarden

Details: Work in a kindergarden with small children in Tallinn – 9 months starting in

3. Tallinn City´s Board for Disabled People (TCBDP) (2008-EE-30)

Details: working with disabled people in different centres in Tallinn. Creative workshops

at TCBDP, english language discussion groups with blind people, arts and crafts

workshops with mentally disabled people – 9 months starting in September 2012 until

end of May 2013.

Preferred profile: Young person with good communication skills and creative in

different arts skills. Previous experience with mentally disable people is taken in good

consideration.

4. NGO Circus Studio Folie (2009-EE-30)

Details: Work in a Circus Studio, assisting in several circus workshops and acting

classes – 9 months starting in September 2012 until end of May 2013.

Preferred profile: Young person with strong desire to work with young people, creative,

pro-active and communicative. Circus skills and teaching skills are taken in good

consideration.

5. Kinobuss NGO (2011-EE-15)

Details: Kinobuss is a small NGO that works under philosophy: cinema to the people by

 

promoting animation and cinema workshops in schools and other organisation interested.

Activities start in September 2012 until end of May 2013.

Preferred profile: Open minded, interested in cinema and with good communication

skills. Knowledge in PR, photography and blogging in an added value.

Volunteers must be older than 22.

6. Centre for Disabled Youth in Tallinn - Juks (2009-EE-17)

Details: working with mentally disabled people in different units of the centre in Tallinn -

9 months starting in September 2012 until end of May 2013 – 2 vacancies.

Preferred profile: Young person easy going, calm, friendly and not afraid of physical

work with disable people. Previous experience with mentally disabled people is taken in

good consideration.

7. Day Care Center Käo (2010-EE-16)

Details: working with mentally disable people. Work in day care centre with mentally

disable adults and in children day care with young people in Tallinn - 9 months starting

in September 2012 until end of May 2013 – 2 vacancies (adults centre and children

centre, please specify your preference in motivation letter).

Preferred profile: Young Person with creativity, pro-active, friendly and interested in

arts. Previous experience with mentally disabled people is taken in good consideration.

8. Maria and Children Orphan House (2010-EE-28)

Details: working with orphan children and young people in orphan house and local

primary school. Developing different activities with them during the free time and

support the children in the everyday bases - 9 months starting in September 2012 until

May 2013. Project is situated in a very small community in East-Estonia.

Preferred profile: Young Person with a very strong motivation to work with children

and ability to cope with the life in small village away from big centres, strong mental

attitude and dynamic, willing to learn Estonian fast.

9. Youth Center and Primary School in Tudulinna

Details: working with a local local primary school. Developing different activities with

them during the free time and support the children in the everyday bases. 9 months

starting in September 2012 until end May 2013. Project is situated in a very small

community in East-Estonia.

Preferred profile: Young Person with a very strong motivation to work with children

and ability to cope with the life in small village away from big centres, strong mental

attitude and dynamic, willing to learn Estonian fast.

Obs: Volunteers which the sending organisation is open to apply themselves for the

10. Maidla Youth Centre (2009-EE-18)

Details: Project in East-Estonia working with local youngsters in open youth centre in a

small village in a rural area organising different activities with and for them - 9 months

starting in September 2012 until end of May 2013.

Preferred profile: Young person willing to work with teenagers, creative, and able to

live in a very small community with limited transport access.

11. Keila Youth Centre (2009-EE-36)

Details: Project in west Harjumaa county (near Tallinn) working with local youngsters in

open youth centre in a small village organising different activities with and for them - 9

months starting in September 2012 until May 2013.

Preferred profile: Young person willing to work with teenagers, creative, pro-active,

and able to live in a small community

12. Haljala Youth Centre (2011-EE26)

Details: Project takes place in a youth centre operating in a small village in north Estonia

called Haljala. Tasks of the volunteer will be to organise different activities for and with

youth visiting the centre - 9 months starting in September 2012 until May 2013.

Preferred profile: Volunteer should have good communication skills, s/he should want

to work with young people and to be ready to work in a small community.

13. The Culture and Sports Centre Uulu 2009-EE-23

Details: Project takes place in a youth centre active in a small village in south Estonia

called Uulu. Tasks of the volunteer will be to organise different activities for and with

youth visiting the centre - 9 months starting in September 2012 until May 2013.

Preferred profile: Volunteer should have good communication skills, s/he should want

to work with young people and to be ready to work in a small community.

Details: working with a local Youth Center and local Orphanage in Elva (near Tartu).

Une amie sur place m'avait demandé quelques commentaires sur mon expérience:

 

My first impression of Ukraine was of a tiny, not so modern airport and very old-looking buses. The black fumes coming out of them also told me there were no safety/anti-air pollution regulations here. Some of the cars and buses I saw in Kiev and later in Sumy would not be allowed on our roads (they would not pass the annual security inspection).

I went on to notice a lot more superficial (or structural differences) like this, in clothing, shops appearance and products on offer, housing, the amount of employees for each business (we Westerners live in a very mechanised world, losing sometimes in the process this valuable human touch), Most shocking perhaps was the amount of stray dogs. But there is nothing new or essential in these observations, although they highlight an omnipresent social precarity and lack of proper state planning and management of the public space.

My more personal and relevant indications of how to view Ukraine (unfortunately in a very Black and White approach because I find Ukraine is a land of contrast in many ways) stems from friendships I have built and difficulties I have encountered. 

If I put it in a trivial composition I could say the following:

I don't like risking my neck every morning slipping on the ice or every night crossing the dimly-lit roads.
I like hearing the marshrutka driver have an argument with a customer even though I can't understand a word they're saying.
I like the little houses in the villages that seem buried in fog and snow, like forgotten children lost in the woods.
I don't like walking out my door and coughing my lungs out due to cars pollution and the chemical factory nearby.
I like looking at the beautiful frozen lake outside my bedroom window.
I don't like walking around this lake and see all the litter strewn all over its banks.
I like the way people spontaneously help others in the marshrutkas (holding their bags, passing on the money,etc.)
I don't like queuing at the train station to buy a ticket because everyone is so stressed, including the ticket lady.

I could go on like this, representing my mixed feelings about Ukraine, the days I thoroughly enjoy being in this country and the days I find nothing works here and I better get back to the civilised world.

But to keep it short, I should say I have seen its beauties and flaws in the space of these four months and I highly value this experience, I believe it has taught me a lot. A bit more patience, but also a lot more appreciation for the social gains in the West and an increased desire to fight in order to keep them (i.e. social welfare and a strong and active civil society).

On the plus side, Ukrainian people have welcomed me with open arms, I spent Christmas and New Year in the traditional way, people took care of me as if I were their own child (even people my own age :) I experienced a genuine interest for my origins and knowledge from market sellers to university students. I was pleased to see how I contributed to spreading information about my country when leading language workshops at the library. I enjoyed the enthusiasm expressed by many in sharing their history, culture and cuisine (which I have particularly appreciated!). I could encapsulate these qualities in a few words: generosity, hospitability and a strong desire to learn and improve.

On the minus side, I have seen a dreadful level of education (pupils in secondary schools have the level of our primary school children) and most appalling were the teacher's skills, especially in foreign language, which are too limited to remediate this (and often I witnessed them spreading erroneous information). Which presages poorly for the society as education is the bastion of a nation. I fell victim to stupid laws that make staying in Ukraine almost impossible for foreigners and will certainly not help it develop stronger ties to the EU. I also had to deal with corruption, incompetence and a lack of ideals coming from the NGO where I was volunteering, which should be setting an example by spreading European values. I have also suffered from the biggest obstacle Ukraine will have to face in its intent to reach the likes of Estonia or Latvia, people's reluctance to take responsibility for the problems in their country. Unless Ukrainians are prepared to act (change their defeatist attitude from "it's always been like this, what can I do?" to a more encompassing "let's move things together"), Ukraine will remain a beautiful souvenir for me, but never a country where I would happily live in.

So here is my advice: get organised, refuse to pay bribes, if your English teacher is bad, don't use this as an excuse to give up trying, use the internet to teach yourself. Tell people you know or meet to please stop throwing trash on the street. Look around, see what is failing, and come up with a solution. Only you can help yourselves.
